New year, new hue? The top paint trends of 2022 revealed

With Christmas on the way, now is prime time to re-decorate – so you may be thinking new year, new hue? To help, the biggest paint colour trends for 2022 have been revealed.

With the help of Google search data1, experts at regulated property buyers, GoodMove, have revealed the top paint trends for 2022, and how many people have been searching for them.

Plus, GoodMove have worked with colour specialist Abbey Hesketh to suggest which room each colour will work best in, and what mood it will bring to each room. So, what are 2022’s biggest paint trends?

1. Bright, uplifting colours

One of the biggest trends in paint colour for 2022 is a switch from cool, earthy tones to bright, sunny shades. From the pandemic, we’ve seen many people are searching for new ways to warm up and brighten the space that they spend the most time in, and painting rooms in brighter, uplifting colours is one of the best ways to do this.

2. Bringing the outside in

Bringing the outside in continues to be a huge trend in paint colours for 2022. Stemming again from the pandemic, choosing gentle, fresh shades make us feel at one with the outside (even if we’re stuck inside!) and helps to create a sense of calm.

3. Creating a comforting, cocooning feeling

Especially seen in bedrooms and living rooms, we’re seeing a favour towards darker, deep paint colour tones that create a sense of intimacy and comfort in our homes. Over the past 18 months, we are craving comfort and cosiness from our homes and these colours are the perfect way to emulate this.

So, which of these colours should you use across your home? Abbey Hesketh of Graham & Brown shares her thoughts below.

Kitchen

  • Choose bright yellows
  • +19% increase in searches for ‘yellow paint for kitchen’ in the past year

“Bright yellow shades represent optimism and happiness, so they are the perfect pick for promoting positive emotions within the home. Since the kitchen is the first one you head to in the morning, it is important to choose a shade that will wake you up and start your day on a positive note.”

Bedroom

  • Choose dark aubergine
  • +22% increase in searches for ‘purple bedroom’ in the past year

“Dark aubergine is very much here to stay as we see rich purple shades begin to pop up again for Winter. Deep plums and aubergines are deep and indulgent, perfect for any room you want to cocoon in, such as the bedroom.”

Living room

  • Choose grey-greens and warm neutrals
  • +23% increase in searches for ‘warm neutral paint’ and +33% increase for ‘grey green living room’ in the past year

“When toned down enough, green can be just as neutral as beige, without being boring. Green has calming properties as it so closely emulates nature, so it is ideal for a living room, creating an environment you can relax and unwind in.”

Bathroom

  • Choose light blues
  • +250% increase in ‘blue bathroom suite ideas’ in the past year

“Light blues reflects beautifully in water emulating parts of nature such as a clear sky or tranquil lake. This creates an environment that is perfect to relax and unwind in.”

Front door

  • Choose blues
  • +47% increase in searches in ‘blue door’ in the past year

“A classic blue shade is a timeless choice for a front door. Blue works especially well if you have a red brick home as the blue tones contrast the orange tones in the bricks. It is also a great choice for the exterior of your home as it reflects the colour of the sky, blending perfectly into the environment.”

To conclude, Nima Ghasri, Director at Good Move, says: “As we approach the New Year, many of us look to top interior trends to see how they can update their home for the year ahead. Paint is one of the easiest ways to refresh a room, and it’s interesting to see the new paint trends set to be huge in 2022. Hopefully, these tips will help you choose a colour to really update and refresh your home – and make it super on-trend too!”
